Wayne “Vene” Chun — beloved father, cultural ambassador and pillar of the Maui arts community, is facing the fight of his life. What began as a serious spinal injury turned out to be spinal cancer. After emergency surgery, Vene is awaiting further test results and a treatment plan. He’s been unable to work for over a month, and the medical bills are mounting. Vene has spent years bridging visitors with our island’s youth, sharing Hawaiian practices and strengthening our community.
He is a devoted husband and father who, after losing his own parents and brother in recent years, now faces this devastating diagnosis. His daughter, Alohalani, recently earned a full volleyball scholarship on the mainland; because of his illness, Vene cannot accompany her to college — a moment they’d long dreamed of.
Thanks to the help of his friend Ron Purdy, co‑trustee of the Gilbert and Aileen Kam Chuck Trust, Vene will soon travel to City of Hope in Arizona to receive specialized treatment.
Funds raised will go directly toward Vene’s medical and living expenses, easing the financial burden so he can focus on recovery. Vene has given so much to Maui; now it’s our turn to give back. Every contribution helps. Please donate and share Vene’s story to show your aloha for this remarkable man.
